i have been amazed on how people are responding to this blog. i guess i have to broadcast the site publicly if i wanted to have more readers. it's the comments section that seems to left me dumbfounded. to you my dear readers, thank you.
enough of that thank you speech.
the whole country still has the manny pacquiao fever. this disease spreads more than your usual peanut butter in your kitchen. even our dear president caught the strange disease. anyways, i am talking about pacquiao's win over morales just a few weeks ago. after that brilliant fight (which i also enjoyed), us filipinos has the biggest smile in the world. it was a great fight indeed and i love pacquiao more than ever.
since then, the media labeled manny as the greatest filipino athlete. i have no beef with manny being the greatest but i don't think now is the time to label him as the greatest filipino athlete ever. you see, manny is still young and has more way to go. take for example the losing/aging morales. morales is part of the 3 great mexicans because he has captured 3 titles, namely, IBF, WBA, WBO. not only that, he managed to own these prized jewels for three years. now that is something we call great.
yeah yeah, pacquiao reunited the country for a while. but please take note that it is only for a while. just like the food coupons the government gave to the poor, it is just band aid solution to our problems! after all the pacquiao fever, we will go back to nurse our real disease, politics. all we can do is to thank our new hero for being that band aid.
i have nothing against pacquiao. i love him, he brought honor and respect to our nation. but please, take it easy on tagging to his name, "the greatest filipino athlete". pacquiao is on his way, so let us all wait and enjoy watching his road to greatness. remember that muhammad ali once said that he is the greatest. it turned out to be that the greatest boxer ever in history as acknowledged is Sugar Ray.
let us not forget Efren "Bata" Reyes and Django Bustamante in Billiards. they were once ranked number 1 in the world. let us not forget Paeng Nepmuceno who won the world bowling championships for 4 straight years (until now, no one has ever broke that record). let us not also forget the late boxer, Gabriel "Flash" Elorde who was World Super Flyweight champion from 1960-1967 (the longest reign ever in the division). there was also the incredible Francisco "Pancho Villa" Guilledo who defended his title 24 times. all these people i've mentioned can also claim their greatest filipino athlete tag too.
manny will be the greatest filipino athlete anytime soon. i can't wait for that to happen.
sometimes, media is just being so ridiculous and they don't seem to notice that they are forgetting those years when we savored the victories of other filipino athletes. all they are thinking is just the sell of their newspapers and the award they'd wish to get for their columns.
sometimes, people are blinded by all these media work. letting us forget the other best athletes we had before pacquiao. their time may be gone but the honor that they gave to our country is timeless.
